Welcome to Aquila, an off-grid glamping experience nestled in the heart of the Coal River Valley, Tasmania
A family affair
We’re Alice and Jason, and our family has been farming this piece of Tasmanian bushland for decades. We respect the original owners of our land, the Moorairremener people, and acknowledge the current disadvantage that exists for First Nations cultures, with a personal intention to continue learning and doing better. Our special piece of paradise is named for the Aquila audax fleayi – or Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle – that can often be seen soaring over our land. Along with our family, we have long respected and adored the magnificent “wedgie”. The local Aquila seem to know and watch us, just as we watch and admire them. We hope that you, our guests, will also be lucky enough to get to know this special bird at Aquila.
Off-grid, sustainable living
We are deeply passionate about this land and the natural resources the earth and sun provide. Sustainable living is at the heart of the Aquila experience, and we are proud to employ a ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ philosophy in everything we do by relying exclusively on solar power, choosing locally made as much as possible, and giving back to the precious environment in which Aquila makes its home. It’s our pleasure to share these values through off-grid glamping experiences that offer ultimate luxury and comfort in a unique country setting of space and freedom.
A personal passion project
Aquila Glamping has been built and created solely by us. Within it lies who we are, reflecting our hobbies and interests. Our love for native wildlife and bird photography, plants and gardening, building and woodwork, winemaking and honey production is shared through the various spaces and places of the property.
The colours of lush bath towels explicitly chosen for their likeness to local birdlife, landscaped gardens of Australian natives that promote biodiversity and feed our bees, locally-made sculptures atop magnificent old timber beams collected from unusual places, aviaries occupied by rescued parrots now enjoying their bird paradise, and a vineyard of old vines once headed for a bonfire … around every corner, through every gate, and within every Eco Pod and Glamping Tent, Aquila celebrates upcycled creativity and unique ideas.
The very best of Tasmanian wine country
Tasmania’s reputation as one of the world’s finest cool-climate wine-growing regions is well-deserved, and Aquila’s home in the Coal River Valley provides ideal access to some of the state’s top drops.
While they’re at the mercy of the region’s often unpredictable weather, Tasmanian vineyards produce high-quality, low-yield fruit that results in elegant, aromatic and characteristic wines. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are iconic here, but you’ll also find Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé, sparkling and some other surprises along the local wine trail, complete with friendly cellar door experiences and expert knowledge from the people behind the produce.
We count many of the Coal River Valley’s brilliant winemakers as friends, and we’re only too happy to share some of our favourite tipples and hidden gems.
